Top Moments from 2020

Another golf season has drawn to a close here at Cabot and we’d like to thank all of you who have kept in touch and showed your support over the past few months!

While the season has not been without its challenges, we are grateful for the wonderful silver linings that came with it and we look forward to carrying all that we’ve learned into the seasons to come!

With the golf season behind us, we thought it would be a good time to reflect on all the great moments 2020 brought us.

Take a walk down memory lane with us as we highlight our top moments from the season.

1. Preview Play: The Nest

We celebrated the opening of our third golf course, The Nest, for preview play earlier this season. The Nest is a Par-3, 10-hole routing perched on the highest point of Cabot Cliffs, affording some of the best views on property. The goal of this Rod Whitman & Dave Axland design is to offer the same excitement and creativity you have come to expect from a round of golf at Cabot, but one that can be played with a handful of clubs in a fraction of the time. The course is designed to be welcoming to juniors and those new to the game, while remaining challenging and leaving room for creativity for our more seasoned golfers. Following a great preview play season, we can’t wait for our grand opening in 2021!

2. Growing the Game

Each year, Cabot Cape Breton offers multiple week-long junior camps for kids ages 6-15. Developed for youth to receive instruction in all areas of the game, the camps are lead by Cabot’s outstanding PGA of Canada Golf Professionals, and cover basic fundamentals, etiquette and sportsmanship.

This year, in an effort to grow the game and improve inclusivity in golf, we built on the success of our Junior Camps through launching a Junior Camp Nomination Program for our local community. The program focuses on removing financial and social barriers that prevent some youth from getting involved in the sport. Through this program, we were thrilled to provide free registration for two boys and two girls ages 7-12 from the local area, who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to learn the game.

We were also excited to use The Nest this season for on-course learning!

3. 2020 Accolades

Amid the unprecedented circumstances of 2020, accolades from the golf and tourism industry remained a bright light for our team here at Cabot. A year that started with Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links ranked #11 and #35 in the world by Golf Digest, and a peak season that kicked off with the courses ranked #1 and #5 in Canada by ScoreGolf, we are honoured to have so many amazing moments to look back on! We were incredibly proud to make Travel and Leisure’s exclusive list of the Top 10 Resort Hotels in Canada, as well as Forbes’ list of the 10 Best Golf resorts with Private Cottages or Cabins. We also received the 2020 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice award.

4. Cabot Families

Family has always been a focus for us here for us at Cabot, and we love welcoming families to the resort. Earlier this season, Christian Hafer wrote a beautiful piece about his vacation to Cabot that really highlighted the magic of experiencing this destination as a family. With the preview play opening of The Nest this season, a golf experience that can be enjoyed by all ages, we are now more family-friendly than ever! It’s been so heartwarming to see people coming together over the sport we all love – the pictures say it all!

5. Lost and Found

We are always proud to see our team go above and beyond for our guests, and this #CabotStory is a nice example of what a little good-hearted teamwork can accomplish:

In July, newlyweds Alex and Jamie Lee Zafiris set out for a morning round of golf at Cabot Cliffs. On the first tee, Jamie Lee took her rings off and put them in her pocket. The weather that morning was such that Jamie Lee took her jacket on and off multiple times throughout the round. When the couple arrived at the 11th green, Jamie Lee checked her pockets and noticed her three rings (her engagement ring and two diamond wedding bands) were gone!

Taking immediate action, their caddie Emily Walker called the Cliffs caddie master, and they all began retracing their steps. The Cliffs golf operations team enlisted the help of Player’s Assistant Keith MacMillan and provided carts for both Emily and Keith to help the Zafaris’ retrace their steps more efficiently from holes 1 to 10. Referencing the many photos Alex had taken throughout the round to see in what areas the jacket was on versus off, the “search team” narrowed down the gaps of when Jamie Lee might have pulled it out of her bag. After a couple of hours searching, they were relieved to find the wedding band on the 7th hole.  Shortly after, our Beverage Cart staff member found the other two rings together near the back tee on the 2nd hole!

We were so happy to see the newlyweds head home with the rings back on hand!

6. Cabot Ale

We were extremely excited to join forces with the amazing team at Breton Brewing to launch our new signature beer, Cabot Ale! Breton Brewing is located on Cape Breton Island, and while we have proudly offered their beers on tap here at Cabot for years, it feels extra special to now offer one with our name on it!

Offered exclusively here at Cabot Cape Breton, Cabot Ale can be enjoyed in cans on the courses or on tap at the Cabot Public House and Cabot Bar. A light lagered ale designed with the golf course in mind, Cabot Ale comes in at 4% and is crisp, clean and easy drinking!

7. Real Estate Opportunities

Expanding our real estate offerings has been another amazing highlight to the 2020 season. With just three Cliffs Residences left available in our first phase of Cliffs real estate, we are so excited to soon have more people calling Cabot Cape Breton their home away from home! Masterfully designed and located in the heart of Cabot Cliffs, the homesites provide stunning ocean and golf course views as well as all of the elements that make up the total Cabot experience. Close to all the action, the Cliffs Residences are just a short walk or cart ride to the first tee at Cabot Cliffs, The Nest, the future clubhouse, the Cliffs Events Barn, tennis courts and future health and wellness offerings!

8. Hole-in-one Hall of Fame

A highlight to every season, there is a pure joy that comes with celebrating our hole-in-one hall-of-famers! This season, we had a number of hole-in-ones on Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links, as well as our first ever hole-in-one on The Nest! Some Hole-in-one highlights include the first ace of season by Cabot Caddie John Chisholm at Cabot Links, the first ever hole-in-one at The Nest by Dan Ryan, and Cabot Caddie Jim MacMaster’s 5th hole in one, taking place at 6th hole at Cabot Cliffs!

Check out our Hole-in-One Hall of Fame to see the smiling faces behind the aces!
